This year’s National PrepareAthon Day takes place on April 30, 2015. The PrepareAthon will provide participating individuals, communities and organizations with action-based guidance to practice the steps necessary to stay safe during a disaster or emergency. The campaign encourages Americans to learn about mitigation measures and understand community plans, including alerts and warnings, evacuation and sheltering.
Emergency Communications Network (ECN) strongly encourages CodeRED clients to help spread the message of emergency preparedness during America’s PrepareAthon. It is important for CodeRED clients to use this event as an opportunity to initiate conversation about preparedness among residents and boost enrollment for their CodeRED mass notification system.
Leverage the power of social media to get the word out about your CodeRED mass notification system. According to the Pew Research Center, 58 percent of all American adults use Facebook and 19 percent use Twitter. These platforms can be used to share information about CodeRED and post a link where residents can opt-in for alerts. Nearly half of all Facebook users have more than 200 friends, so remember to ask residents to share your CodeRED posts.
If you have organized a community event for National PrepareAthon Day, remember to incorporate signing up the CodeRED mass notification system into the event. Prior to starting an activity, talk to participants about the CodeRED system or suggest they download the CodeRED Mobile Alert app. For example, the City of Nashua used an iPad kiosk to have people sign up for CodeRED during their PrepareAthon event.
