Sarasota County Keeps Residents Informed During Hurricane Irma with CodeRED from OnSolve

In September of 2017, Sarasota County, Florida, was hit with intense winds as Hurricane Irma moved through the area.

As the storm receded and residents emerged from their homes, they discovered downed tree limbs on roofs and blocking streets throughout the county. Floodwaters made some roads impassable, fences were torn down, and many homes sustained damage. Things could have been worse if not for the steady communication provided by county authorities.

Officials used the CodeRED from OnSolve notification system to alert citizens over the course of the storm about evacuations, flood advisories and utility service interruptions. Sarasota County also used CodeRED to alert county employees about office closures and to mobilize emergency responders for Hurricane Irma.

Based on the County’s experience with the system, other jurisdictions and government entities in Sarasota County have acquired CodeRED from OnSolve as their notification system and their feedback has been positive. Administrators like how user-friendly the system is and especially appreciate the pre-defined phone lists and GIS mapping feature. Managers report significant cost savings in using the system in lieu of sending out boots-to-the ground crews. The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Department has used the system for issuing a CodeRED call-out to successfully locate a missing elderly resident.
