Sarasota County Public Utitlies

We began using CodeRED in 2009 and have been very satisfied with this web-based notification system. Personally, I have used other emergency notification systems, but CodeRED is a top-quality service with powerful integration capabilities. It has provided us the ability to send immediate, efficient, and effective notifications to residents about missing persons, suspicious individuals, major accidents and traffic detours, evacuations, and other types of alerts. It’s a very robust system because of its various mediums for notifications, easy reporting and statistical tools, custom contact group and map layer upload functions, and its simple registration process for residents to opt-in.

Most recently, we have used the CodeRED system to send notifications of debris clean-up following the Siesta Key tornado on January 17, 2016. We also use the system for utility service outages and boil water advisories. Based on our experience with the system, other county departments have added user accounts to our contract and other jurisdictions and government entities in Sarasota County have acquired CodeRED as their notification system.

The feedback we’ve received on the CodeRED system has been extremely positive. End-users report how user-friendly the system is to use for call-outs (pre-defined phone lists and drawn-out areas on maps).  Managers report the significant cost savings they’ve experienced using CodeRED for emergency notifications in lieu of boots-to-the ground crews. We even had a particular family who thanked the Sarasota County Sherriff’s Department for locating their elderly family member as a direct result of a CodeRED call-out for a Silver Alert.

I am proud that Sarasota County has become a best practice model for fully utilizing CodeRED for emergency events and for communicating throughout the community, the importance of registering to receive life-saving CodeRED alerts.
